College of Dental Medicine (CDM)—Predoctoral Program 2024–2025 122 The CDM’s Office of Student Services must provide the SPC with progress reports for committee discussion and action on any students who have received behavioral sanctions or referral to the SPC. Students may be placed on monitored academic status by the SPC as a result of faculty concerns about a student’s clinical, didactic, and/or research progress, and ethical, professional, or behavioral issues. Students may be subject to more frequent monitoring and advisement of academic and behavioral progress. e. review the reinstatement of predoctoral students on administrative break in enrollment status who are not in good academic standing f. recommend appropriate actions to the dean (see the section on Academic, Behavioral, and Disciplinary Actions in this student handbook) g. r ecommend candidates to the dean who qualify for graduation to receive the Doctor of Dental Medicine (D.M.D.) degree 2. SPC Membership The SPC membership shall include faculty and administrative members, as well as an SPC chair from the CDM’s faculty, all appointed by the dean. 3. SPC Meeting Protocols and Process: Academic Deficiencies and/or Behavioral Issues The SPC reviews the academic and/or behavioral matters and program progress of all predoctoral students. Students who have current or ongoing academic deficiencies, program progress concerns, and/or behavioral issues may be requested—in writing, either via email to the student’s NSU email address, certified mail to the student’s address on file with the university, or via hand delivery with receipt—to meet with the SPC to discuss their academic performance and/or behavioral issue(s). Students referred to the SPC for matters that may result in repeat of didactic, laboratory, or clinical courses, or the extension of program length, suspension, or dismissal decisions, as defined in the student handbook, will be required to meet with the SPC. The student should refer to the student handbook for reference to the relevant policies that describe the SPC process and the Appeals Board process, and may meet with the assistant dean of Academic Affairs for additional guidance in this process. This meeting with the SPC will provide students with the opportunity to advise the SPC of any circumstances they feel are relevant to their academic deficiencies and/or behavioral issue(s) that should be considered by the committee in making its recommendation to the dean. The student shall receive at least three business days’ (excluding official school holidays and weekends) written notice of the time, place, and subject of the meeting. The student may waive the three business days requirement. If a student has been properly notified to appear at the SPC and fails to appear, it can be considered that the student has forfeited the right to appear at the meeting, and the committee members will consider the information that is available to them when rendering a decision. The following protocol will be followed when the SPC meets with predoctoral students to discuss their academic deficiencies and/or behavioral issue(s): a. The SPC will review with the student the reason(s) for the meeting, may attempt to gain from the student a more in-depth understanding of the basis for the student’s academic difficulties and/or
