Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Allopathic Medicine (NSU MD) 2024–2025 41 • Supervision and teaching of medical students may be delegated by the supervising faculty member to resident physicians and other health care providers only to the extent that the contemplated student activity is within the scope of practice of the supervisor. • The supervising faculty member has medical and legal responsibility for the patient’s care and is ultimately responsible for patient evaluation and management. Levels of Supervision Direct—The supervising faculty member, or designee, is physically present with the medical student and the patient (required for all procedures). Indirect Supervision with Direct Supervision Immediately Available—The supervising faculty member, or designee, is physically present at the clinical site and is immediately available to provide direct supervision. The supervisor may not be engaged in activities which would delay the supervisor’s response to a student requiring direct supervision. Oversight—The supervising faculty member is available to provide review of encounters and provide feedback after care is delivered. It is the supervising faculty member’s responsibility to understand and abide by NSU MD’s determination of the appropriate degree of involvement/participation by the student and the level of supervision that each student should have when providing patient care in a clinical learning environment. The student’s degree of involvement/participation in clinical care activities must be in alignment with the intended educational objectives, and the student’s participation in such activity must be judged by the supervising physician as legitimately needed to achieve said objectives. NSU MD expects that no students are unnecessarily exposed to performing clinical interventions that may represent high risk of contagion or other safety concerns. Factors that must be taken into consideration when determining the level of involvement of a student in patient care include • the curricular expectations of the course/clerkship in which the student is enrolled (learning objectives, required clinical encounters, etc.) • the developmental level of the student • the complexity of the care or procedure • the potential for adverse effects • the demonstrated competence, maturity, and responsibility of the student • the consent of the patient to have a student involved in their care Medical students are expected to acknowledge their own limitations and request assistance or decline participation in any aspect of patient care in which they do not feel comfortable or competent. Monitoring Compliance with Supervision Policies Clerkship directors, with administrative support provided by the facility, will receive periodic updated information on new faculty members or residents added to the service, and will confirm that any new
