180 Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Allopathic Medicine (NSU MD)—Master of Biomedical Sciences (M.B.S.) Program 2024–2025 Appeal Process Students are permitted to appeal a decision of dismissal by the GPC. A ruling by the GPC of probation or suspension will be final and binding. No further option for appeal will be considered. Should a student elect to appeal the committee’s decision of dismissal, a written appeal to the NSU MD executive associate dean of Academic and Student Affairs must be received within 10 business days of the date of the decision letter. In order to appeal the decision, the appeal must fall into one of the following categories: • The student has new, relevant evidence that was not available during the investigation or adjudication by the GPC that would substantially alter the outcome of the case. • Information that the applicable university procedures were not followed, and the deviance would substantially affect the outcome. • The sanction(s) do not relate appropriately to the violation(s). Upon receipt of a student’s notice of intent to appeal the GPC’s decision for dismissal, the executive associate dean of Academic and Student Affairs will convene and chair an ad hoc committee comprising three faculty members not serving on the GPC. The chair and ad hoc committee will meet with the student within 10 business days of receiving the student’s appeal. The meeting with the student is limited to the student and appropriate university representatives. The student may not have an adviser present during the meeting. The student will have an opportunity to make an opening and closing statement and to take notes during the meeting. The student may submit written materials to the chair in advance of, or at, the meeting. The student will not be permitted to be present during discussions or deliberations of the ad hoc committee. The executive associate dean of Academic and Student Affairs and the ad hoc committee are entitled to review the student’s complete academic record, as well as all information available to the GPC, and are entitled to independently determine the action(s) appropriate in the student’s case. The executive associate dean of Academic and Student Affairs and the ad hoc committee will make a recommendation to the dean. All rulings indicated in the decision letter from the dean will be final and binding. No further option for appeal will be considered. Academic Standing and Due Process Policies and Procedures The GPC is appointed by the dean to monitor student academic and professional standards, as determined by the faculty members for the M.B.S. program. The GPC reviews academic performance after each grading period and determines each student’s academic standing. The committee reviews each student’s final course grades for every semester completed and makes recommendations for graduation, promotion, or placement on academic probation based on academic policy. Students in good standing automatically advance to the next semester of study. Each semester, the GPC also endorses the graduation of all students who have successfully completed all graduation requirements. Students who meet the criteria for academic discipline (probation, suspension, dismissal) will receive a letter from the M.B.S. program director outlining the basis for the sanction.
