Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Allopathic Medicine (NSU MD)—Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) Program 2024–2025 123 Grade and Competency Reports In addition to the final grade, NSU MD will provide students with more detailed information on their performance via internal Grade Reports. Grade Reports will provide information that includes • scores on examinations and other numerically scored assessments • written narrative comments with a designation as to whether they are summative (may be included in the MSPE) or formative (for internal NSU MD use only, to help the student improve performance in future courses) • a rating of Satisfactory (S), Satisfactory with Concern (SC), or Unsatisfactory (U) for each competency assessed in the block or course A U rating for any competency will result in a final grade of Fail (F) for the block/course. Students may receive a final grade of Pass (P) with one or more SC competency ratings. The SC rating indicates that the student has academic weaknesses and could be at risk of failure, despite having received a final grade of P for the block/course. Students who receive any rating of SC will be monitored by the NSU MD Student Monitoring Committee and referred for support to improve performance. They may also be referred to the SPAC or o ther appropriate parties/committees for further action. The SC rating will not be reported on the official transcript. Class Standing and Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) NSU MD does not report class standing (rank) of individual students internally or to outside entities (e.g., on the MSPE). NSU MD, however, does calculate class standing based on performance in both the preclerkship blocks/courses and the required core clinical clerkships. Class standing is used solely to determine eligibility for Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA), the national honor society for medical students, and any other honors or awards based on academic excellence. Performance in the preclerkship blocks/ courses is based on the cumulative numeric scores listed in the student’s final grading and competency reports. Performance in clerkships is based on final clerkship grades (H/Honors, HP/High Pass, P/Pass). Student Supervision in Clinical Settings Background Students must be appropriately supervised at all times when assigned to clinical settings. Only faculty members with an appointment at the medical school can supervise, teach, and assess NSU MD medical students in clinical settings/contexts. Faculty members may delegate supervision to other health professionals, only to the extent that the contemplated activity is within the scope of practice of the supervisor. In these instances, the faculty member will still be responsible for the supervision provided by the aforementioned individuals.
