Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Allopathic Medicine (NSU MD)—Master of Biomedical Sciences (M.B.S.) Program 2024–2025 97 The student may submit written materials to the chair in advance of, or at, the meeting. The student will not be permitted to be present during discussions or deliberations of the ad hoc committee. The executive associate dean of Academic and Student Affairs and the ad hoc committee are entitled to review the student’s complete academic record, as well as all information available to the GPC, and are entitled to independently determine the action(s) appropriate in the student’s case. The executive associate dean of Academic and Student Affairs and the ad hoc committee will make a recommendation to the dean. All rulings indicated in the decision letter from the dean will be final and binding. No further option for appeal will be considered. Academic Standing and Due Process Policies and Procedures The GPC is appointed by the dean to monitor student academic and professional standards, as determined by the faculty members for the M.B.S. program. The GPC reviews academic performance after each grading period and determines each student’s academic standing. The committee reviews each student’s final course grades for every semester completed and makes recommendations for graduation, promotion, or placement on academic probation based on academic policy. Students in good standing automatically advance to the next semester of study. Each semester, the GPC also endorses the graduation of all students who have successfully completed all graduation requirements. Students who meet the criteria for academic discipline (probation, suspension, dismissal) will receive a letter from the M.B.S. program director outlining the basis for the sanction. Students are permitted to appeal academic dismissals only. A GPC decision of suspension or probation is final and not subject to further appeal. Students who wish to appeal academic dismissal will be referred to the GPC. Upon receipt of the written appeal, the committee will take appropriate action and will provide information on the next steps. (See Appeal Policy.) A. Satisfactory Academic Progress Students in the M.B.S. program are expected to complete their graduate program within the following guidelines: 1. A student must maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher. 2. A student must have no more than 6 credit hours of coursework with a letter grade of C or lower. 3. A student must complete graduation requirements within five years of matriculation. 4. A student who takes an approved leave of absence must meet all agreed upon terms of the approved leave. Note: Satisfactory Academic Progress for financial aid eligibility should not be confused with the college’s academic policies described here.
