Certificates are issued by the VA after approving a claim for benefits. To submit a claim for benefits, please visit va.gov. Initial claims can be filed on a Form 22-1990.
Processing times vary based on VA workload. On average the Department of Veterans Affairs processes a Certificate of Eligibility within 4-6 weeks.
As of August 1, 2020, students are eligible for the following benefit levels:
The VA makes payment directly to the veteran by (1) direct deposit or (2) mailing a check to the mailing address on file at the VA. To establish or change your direct deposit information, click on the Direct Deposit Enrollment Form link after you have logged into WAVE. Changes and enrollments are usually processed the next business day.
Montgomery GI Bill® (Ch 30 and 1606) and REAP: If you attend school, you must verify your enrollment each month by using the WAVE or IVR system or by calling the toll free 1-877-823-2378. Remember that you cannot be paid for a month until the month is over and you verify that you were still in attendance for that month.
Post-9/11 GI Bill® and Vocational Rehabilitation (Ch 31): The VA will send payment for tuition and fees directly to NSU. Book stipends (if applicable) will be sent to you near the beginning of the term (or once your enrollment is processed). Any applicable housing allowance will also be sent directly to you at the end of each month for which you have an enrollment.
Dependent and Eligible Spouse: The VA will pay the student directly via check.
According to NSU's Payment Policy, payment is due in full at the time of registration. However, the Office of the University Bursar offers veteran students a tuition deferment for eligible charges covered by the Veterans Administration (VA) and invoiced at NSU. Any additional charges not covered as part of the veteran student’s benefit package are the student's responsibility and will be considered past due 30 days after the start of the semester.
Veteran students may sign up for an NSU Payment Plan or contact the Office of Student Financial Assistance for information on additional types of aid at 800-806-3680 or (954) 262-3380.
This occurs when you drop a class(es), withdraw from a class(es) or are dropped from a class(es) by the instructor. When this happens, you are required to submit a new VA Enrollment Certification Request Form (available in SharkLink on the Financial Aid page accessible from the left menu) so that your enrollment information may be updated with the DVA.
It is your responsibility to inform the NSU Veteran Certifying Official of the change as well as the DVA Regional Office.
Should it become necessary for you to withdrawal from all classes, you must contact the NSU Veteran Certifying Official before doing so. There are many concerns you should be aware of before withdrawing completely (i.e., repayment). Depending on the circumstances of the withdrawal, the NSU Veteran Certifying Official may be able to assist you in preventing a repayment.
Please note that failure to report changes constitutes fraud and is the primary cause for the delays in the delivery of your educational checks and occurrences of overpayment.
The Tuition Assistance (TA) Authorization Form can be obtained at the service member's unit or education center. A unit approved and properly filled out TA Authorization Form must be submitted by the student at the beginning of each term to the NSU Bursar's Office at:
3300 S. University Drive, Fort Lauderdale, FL, 33328-2004
Phone: (954) 262-5200 or toll free 800-541-6682 ext. 25200.
Clarification Regarding Concurrent Receipt of Federal Tuition Assistance and the MGIB-SR Education Benefit
On May 4, 2021, the Department of Defense issued a new policy approving the use of concurrent receipt for Federal Tuition Assistance (TA) and the Montgomery GI Bill-Selected Reserve Education Benefit (MGIB-SR). As a result of this policy, Reserve Component Service members are authorized to receive both TA and MGIB-SR benefits concurrently when enrolled in a program of education that is half-time or more.
The NSU Veterans Benefit Office does not administer tuition or charges. Several programs at NSU offer discounts to military or veteran students under specific requirements. Each program sets its own requirements for a tuition discount. If you are interested in inquiring about a tuition discount based on military or veteran, please contact your program office.
For information regarding the Department of Defense’s Military Spouse Career Advancement Accounts program (MyCAA), visit Military OneSource and log in or register.
Once accepted by MyCAA, call the Office of the University Bursar at (954) 262-5212 or toll free at 800-541-6682 ext. 25212.
Students may learn about education programs and benefits using the GI Bill® Comparison Tool to determine the entitlement they can receive for their education, training, and housing.
Public Law 116-315, Sec 1018, 38 USC § 3679(f) effective with the Fall 2022 semester prohibits the automatic renewal of veteran education benefits. Therefore, if you wish to use veteran educational benefits, you will need to submit a VA Enrollment Certification Request each semester to authorize the use of benefits. In addition, should there be an increase or decrease in total credits for the semester or a change in courses, you must submit a new request.
