Gifts Made Today
Many of our benefactors express a desire to support the university's goals and mission. A gift to NSU also provides individuals with tangible personal benefits, depending upon the assets utilized to fund the gift.
Gifts of Cash
A cash gift by check is a common and easy method for making an outright charitable contribution. The first tangible benefit of making a gift by cash or check may be the tax deduction for the full value of the gift. The annual limitation on the use of charitable deductions claimed for cash gifts to any public charitable organization is 50 percent of your adjusted gross income. Any unused deduction can be carried over and used for up to five additional years, giving you six full years to use the deduction.
The second benefit is seeing immediate results of your generosity. Through gifts of cash, you demonstrate a strong commitment to advance NSU's mission and help the university reach new levels of excellence.
Assets Worth Donating
Any type of asset that you irrevocably donate to a charitable organization, like NSU, may result in a current income tax deduction, and there may be other tax benefits resulting from your contribution. Should you contribute appreciated securities that you have held for more than one year, you have the added benefit of minimizing capital gains tax. The limit on deductibility in any tax year is 30 percent of your adjusted gross income, but any excess is deductible over the next five years.
You can also choose to donate tangible personal property and take a deduction for its full fair market value if the gift is used for NSU's educational mission and is approved by university officials.
A charitable contribution of real estate-whether it is your personal residence, a vacation home, a farm, commercial real estate, or vacant land-may afford you with numerous tax advantages. Perhaps the simplest way to eliminate capital gains on real estate is to donate it to NSU. When you give your home or other real estate to the university, you create an everlasting testimonial of your interest in the mission of NSU.
