Broward County Sea Turtle Conservation Program

NSU Oceanographic Center operates the Broward County Sea Turtle Conservation Program in partnership with Broward County government. The program provides for the conservation of endangered and threatened sea turtle species within Broward County. While 70% of the nation's sea turtle nesting occurs in Florida, Broward County serves as a normal nesting area of three specific species of sea turtles: the loggerhead sea turtle is listed as threatened; and the green and leatherback sea turtle, which are listed as endangered and critically endangered, respectively. By monitoring nests and creating public awareness, the Broward County Sea Turtle Conservation Program (BCSTCP) helps protect these fragile creatures.

An associated part of this effort is the Marine Environmental Education Center (MEEC), which the Oceanographic Center manages on behalf of Broward County to expand education and outreach about its sea turtles and other valuable marine resources.
