Ethernet Setup Instructions

If you live in Goodwin Residence Hall, you can set your computer up to access the Internet via ethernet. To do this, you must have an ethernet card (not a modem or wireless card) installed on your computer.

If you live in Goodwin Hall, you can set your computer up to access the Internet via ethernet. To do this, you must have an ethernet card (not a modem or wireless card) installed.

  1. Click on the Start button. Go to All Programs, Accessories, Communications and click on New Connection Wizard. You'll see the following screen. Make sure you have Connect to the Internet selected, then click Next.

  2. Select Set up my connection manually and click Next.

  3. Select Connect using a broadband connection that is always on and click Next.

  4. Click Finish.

  5. The Network Connections window should open. If not, click on the Start button. Go to All Programs, Accessories, Communications and click Network Connections. You should see the following window:

  6. Right-click on the icon and left-click Properties. You will see the following screen:

  7. Click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click on Properties. Make sure the screen is filled out as shown below.

  8. Click OK. You will be brought back to the Network Connections window.

To check your setup

  1. Make sure your Ethernet cable is plugged into the data jack.
  2. Click on Start then select Run, type cmd and press enter.
  3. Type ipconfig /all at the prompt.

Verify:

Node Type: Hybrid
DHCP Enabled: Yes
IP Address: 137.52.230.X or 137.52.231.X
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 137.52.230 or 231.1
DNS Servers: 137.52.128.11 and 137.52.224.11
Primary WINS Server: 137.52.128.12
Secondary WINS Server: 137.52.128.13

These instructions assume that you have already installed your ethernet card. The help desk is not able to walk you through installing your ethernet card. If you encounter problems installing your ethernet card, please contact the manufacturer's technical support.

  1. Click on the Windows Start Button button and go to the Control Panel. It is under the Settings menu. Double click on the Network Icon in the Control Panel window.
  2. Scroll through the window and click on TCP/IP ->... for the network card in the computer and then the Properties button.

    NOTE: If TCP/IP is not an option, click on the Add button. Click on the Protocol button and the Add button again. In the Select Network Protocol window in the Manufacturers section, click on Microsoft and in the Network Protocol section click on TCP/IP. Click on OK . You will have to restart your computer after making these changes.
  3. After clicking on Properties, you will see the following screen. Click the circle that indicates "Obtain an IP Address Automatically."

  4. Click on the WINS Configuration tab. Select Use DHCP for WINS Resolution.

  5. Click on the Gateway tab in the upper portion of the window. This will bring up the following. Make sure there is nothing in the installed gateways window. If there is one there click on it and then click on Remove.

  6. Click on the DNS Configuration tab in the upper portion of the window. This will bring up the following. Click on the circle button that indicates "Disable DNS." When finished Click on OK.

  7. You will now be at the Network window then click on OK one last time. After you do this the machine will probably have to reboot in order for the changes to take effect. The system will prompt you if you want to reboot, just answer Yes.

To check your setup

  1. Make sure your Ethernet cable is plugged into the data jack.
  2. Click on Start then select Run, type winipcfg /all and press enter.
  3. Verify that there are entries for the following fields:
    • Node type: Hybrid
    • DNS Servers: (137.52.224.11 & 137.52.224.19)
    • IP Address: 137.52.230 or 231.X
    • Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    • Default Gateway: 137.52.230 or 231.1
    • Primary WINS Server: 137.52.128.12
    • Secondary WINS server: 137.52.128.13
