The Office of Student Employment

Are you ready to get more than a paycheck while earning your NSU degree? Nova Southeastern University provides assistance to NSU students who are looking for employment opportunities they can balance with their school responsibilities. Students can participate in either need-based employment programs, such as Federal Work-Study, or nonneed-based programs, such as the NSU Student Employment Program (on-campus) and the Job Location and Development Program (off-campus). Please review the following information to decide which employment option is right for you:

Federal Work-Study (FWS)

The Federal Work-Study (FWS) program is a need-based program that provides students with part-time employment opportunities to help meet financial need. It offers work experience while providing assistance to the campus and the surrounding community. The FWS award reflects the amount a student may be eligible to earn. Please note that the award does not guarantee employment. A student must be hired and work in order to receive the funds, which are issued as a bi-weekly paycheck.

FWS students may work up to 25 hours per week depending on eligibility. The pay rate varies depending on the position. Interested students must file a FAFSA/Renewal FAFSA. For more information, email finaid@nova.edu or call (954) 262-7990.

America Reads and America Counts

The America Reads/Counts program employs Federal Work-Study students to serve as reading and math tutors to elementary school children. Students must work between 10 to 25 hours per week. Interested students must file a FAFSA/Renewal FAFSA.

Job Location and Development

The Job Location and Development (JLD) program serves in developing and locating off-campus community service jobs for students. Positions are open to all in-school students of Nova Southeastern University who filed a FAFSA, regardless of financial need. Students are encouraged to help improve their community while earning money to help cover their educational expenses. Positions can either be part-time or full-time.

Florida Work Experience

The Florida Work Experience (FWEP) program is a need-based program providing eligible Florida students work experiences to complement and reinforce their educational and career goals. FWEP is awarded to undergraduate students who have not received a first bachelor's degree and who meet Florida residency, citizenship, and academic requirements. Students are to complete the FAFSA/Renewal FAFSA and must be enrolled at least half-time.

Students who have been awarded FWEP will receive an award notice from the Office of Student Financial Assistance. For more information on other State-of-Florida programs and requirements, go to the Florida Department of Education website.

NSU Student Employment

The NSU Student Employment (NSE) program provides part-time, on-campus employment for NSU students, regardless of their financial need. You do not have to apply for financial aid to be considered for these positions; however, you must have completed all admission requirements and must be registered for classes. International students can qualify for this employment program. Students are allowed to work a maximum of 20 hours per week.

Cancel/Reduce Your Student Employment Award

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, commonly also referred to as Affordable Care Act (ACA) or “Obamacare,” was signed into law on March 23, 2010. One of the ACA’s provisions that went into effect January 1, 2014 stipulates that employers with more than 50 workers must offer health insurance to full-time employees or incur penalties.

The primary relationship of student employees at Nova Southeastern University is as a student. The vast majority of NSU’s student employees work part-time while focusing on their academic programs. In order to be considered a full-time employee eligible for health insurance coverage under the ACA, students would have to work an average of 30 hours or more per week over the course of a 12-month period. To the knowledge of the Office of Student Financial Assistance there are no students who currently meet these criteria. If you believe that you are a student employee who meets the criteria for coverage, please notify the Office of Student Financial Assistance promptly.
