U.S. Citizenship Status and Financial Aid Eligibility

Only U.S. citizens and eligible noncitizens may receive federal student aid. If your Student Aid Report (SAR) indicates that you are required to provide documentation to prove that you are a U.S. citizen, you must present original documentation that verifies you are a U.S. citizen to the Social Security Administration and NSU.

Signed originals (not copies) of the following documents will be accepted as proof:

  • Certificate of Naturalization
  • Certificate of U.S. Citizenship
  • U.S. Passport Card
  • U.S. Passport
  • U.S. Birth Certificate

Social Security Administration

  • To locate a Social Security Office near you, visit the official office locator or call the Social Security Administration at 800-772-1213.
  • Present your original documentation in person.
  • You must request a receipt showing that you have updated your citizenship status. (Receipts do not explicitly have to state that you have updated your citizenship status)

NSU

Students may choose one of the following two options to prove U.S. citizenship:

  1. Present original documents in person
Any of the originals listed above may be presented along with the receipt showing that you have updated your citizenship status (see above) at the following locations:
    • One-Stop Shop, Horvitz Administration Building, Main Campus
    • One-Stop Shop, Terry Administration Building, Main Campus
    • Financial Aid Offices at the Shepard Broad Law Center and the H. Wayne Huizenga School of Business and Entrepreneurship (main campus)
    • Your local Regional Campus
  2. Send original documents via secure mail
Any of the originals listed above, as well as the receipt showing that you have updated your citizenship status (see above) may be sent by registered return receipt mail (offered by the United States Postal Service and private delivery services). NSU will use Federal Express to return originals to students to the address from which the original document was sent. If you prefer your original documents to be returned to another address, that information must be provided along with your documents. Please note that NSU cannot send originals overseas or to P.O. boxes.

Originals should be sent to the following address:
