A Leading Authority on Today’s Travel and Hospitality Industries
In 2009, Roy Grimsland became Founder and President of Six Degrees Consulting Corp, a cutting edge travel and hospitality industry sales consulting firm that works with clients to deliver “measureable and sustainable results.” Grimsland (M.B.A. ’00), a 30-year veteran of the travel industry, has personally experienced the sales pressures and challenges facing today’s travel industry sales managers. From this unique perspective, he constructs real-world solutions.
Grimsland has an extensive history with the travel and hospitality industry, having been an original member of the start-up team for Radisson Diamond Cruise and helping to establish its new cruise brand. After leaving to pursue an opportunity with Royal Cruise Line, he was hired back to Radisson Seven Seas (now Regent) to lead its global sales efforts. He remained for 10 years as Vice President of Sales, through the introduction of four new vessels and a six fold growth of the company. Grimsland has also held other senior sales and marketing positions with Paul Gauguin Cruises and Capella Hotels.
Grimsland states the travel industry has grown tremendously over the years, especially the cruise industry. To that end, Six Degrees Consulting Corp was founded upon developing innovative strategies; meticulous attention to client needs; and creative networking across the travel and hospitality industries in pursuit of workable solutions. Grimsland’s ultimate goal is “to provide our clients with sustainable and quantifiable performance improvement. Through such results will come trust and loyalty; two intangible bonds that will link our company to the future successes of our clients and our stakeholders. The ability to create such a lasting relationship is a unique result of delivering on every promise every day.”
He explains, “Starting your own practice in this economic environment is challenging. The key is finding clients who appreciate and recognize the value of outside consulting. It is much more strategic to have an objective party review your company and always better to solve problems organically.” Grimsland enjoys helping a company to succeed and making a significant impact. However, most exciting is to participate in an acquisition or start-up. “There is nothing like being part of that entrepreneurial effort and spirit.”
Reflecting on his experience at Nova, “I am very proud of my M.B.A.; it has helped me dramatically in my career.” His insatiable desire to learn is what led him to pursue an M.B.A. at Nova. The things he was learning were immediately applicable for him and allowed for more critical thinking. NSU’s diversified students and professors allowed Grimsland the practical and academic experience he needed to make significant changes in policies, procedures and processes within the cruise industry.
His advice to students today is “find what you love, gain as much knowledge as you can while you can, never accept mediocrity, push yourself, never stop being open to learning as knowledge is power”. Lastly, Grimsland says words that were instilled in him by his mother. “Follow your dreams and remember that your future is limitless”. His hope is to impart all the knowledge he has acquired and to provide encouragement to others. “I have been very fortunate in my life and I hope I can give some of that back to others.”
